The Locked Door with No Key: Why Ohio’s SB 153 Threatens Our Voting Rights Imagine being told you must enter a building to access your rights—to speak, to be counted, to shape the laws that govern your life. The door is locked, and you're told you need a key. But no one will tell you what kind of key you need. Some folks bring house keys. Others arrive with driver’s licenses, birth certificates, even passports. They jiggle them in the lock—nothing works. They aren’t denied because they’re unqualified. They’re denied because the rules changed without explanation. This is the danger behind Ohio’s Senate Bill 153 (SB 153)—a bill that hasn’t passed yet , but is already knocking on our community’s door. What Is SB 153? SB 153 is a proposed law—not yet passed —currently being considered by Ohio’s state legislature. It would require all voters to prove their citizenship before casting a ballot. That may sound fair on the surface—but the bill doesn’t define what “proof of citizenship” ac...

 Chapter 6 cont.

It was almost six months before Simba stepped back into Brother’s. He looked as if he was under a lot of stress. He checked the books, and reviewed a report on everyone from Wise. Then he disappeared again.
Wise came into the kitchen and called me outside. “Jay I don’t like prying into your business, but what is your relationship with Baba Simba?”
“He is my sponsor.”
“What!? How long have you been in our house?”
“I completed my initiation 6 ½ months ago.”
“Well Baba asked me to give you this.”

He reached into his pocket, and gave me a cowry shell. Cowry shells in the club represent rank. After my initiation I received one shell signifying I was a Brother in the organization. Receiving my second shell was a sign that I was being moved up to the level of Majestic.
“He asked me a lot of questions about you. Far as your work ethic, and I gave you good marks. It seems that he has plans for you. I was in the organization a year and a half before I was moved to majestic. Congratulations and keep up the good work. I will inform everyone of your promotion. Baba Simba also requested that you meet him here after closing.”
I was shocked and thrilled, but I felt uneasy about the after hour meeting. I had no idea of what to expect, and I did not even know how to deal with Simba or Baba Simba because it had been a long time since we talked.
“Oh, there is one more thing, he told me, “ you would not be working here any more.”
“What!?” now I’m really confused. “Did he say why?”
“No, bra you know we just follow orders. We don’t have to understand the whys, we just do. I trust Baba Simba and his judgment. In the last three years of my life I have witnessed him do amazing things in and with the Gye Nyame House so I trust his judgment.”
“Thank you Wise.”
I walked back in the kitchen wondering what was going to happen. I really enjoyed what I was doing. Now, the only thing I could do was wait.
