Walking the Barbell: Tradition on One Side, Revolution on the Other

Walking the Barbell: Tradition on One Side, Revolution on the Other I’ve been re-listening to Antifragile by Nassim Taleb—and something caught my spirit this time around: the Barbell Strategy . Taleb breaks it down as a life design where you operate on two extremes . On one side, you’ve got extreme safety . On the other, calculated risk . And in between? Nothing. That middle space is where comfort hides and where fragility is born. This idea got me thinking deeply about how well it aligns with the life we’re building through Gye-Nyame Journey —and how it could shape a political campaign if I—or one of y’all—ever decided to run for office. The Safe Side: Cultural Roots, Community Wisdom Let’s start with the grounded side of the barbell —the side that holds our traditions, values, and cultural wisdom. This is where we store our principles: Umoja, Kujichagulia, Nia . It’s the bedrock. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what keeps us whole. This side includes our: Rites of passage Community cir...

From Generalist to Master: Reclaiming Depth in a Surface-Level Society

From Generalist to Master: Reclaiming Depth in a Surface-Level Society In a recent conversation with an elder, a powerful truth surfaced—one that continues to rattle my spirit and demand attention. As I reflect on it, I’m not sure if I’ve written about it directly, but I know it shows up in our work, our walk, and our struggles. And it’s this: We are drowning in general knowledge. Our culture today celebrates the idea of being a jack-of-all-trades—a so-called master of everything. We toss around terms like multidisciplinary and well-rounded as if they are inherently empowering. But I fear we’re missing something vital: depth . Real power does not come from shallow waters. It comes from those who dive deep. The Myth of General Knowledge We live in a time when it’s easy to learn just enough to sound informed. Just enough to be dangerous. Just enough to be wrong . This is the Dunning-Kruger effect in motion—when people overestimate their understanding after a surface-level encou...

Guiding Energy & Fake Adults (A Timeless Rant from 2021)

Image
Peace, Family. Three years ago, I hit the mic and went in on something that's still burning in my spirit today. The video you're about to watch — “Guiding Energy & Fake Adults” — was recorded back in June 2021 , but the message remains just as urgent now as it was then. In that rant, I was fired up about the systems we keep handing our children over to — systems that don’t reflect our values, don’t serve our communities, and never truly loved us. I broke down the idea that childhood is a sacred phase for the guiding of energy , not just about chasing jobs or credentials. I asked the hard question: 👉🏿 Who are we preparing our youth to serve? But I didn't stop there. I turned the lens on us — the so-called "grown folks" and "conscious community." Too many are out here walking around like lone wolves, refusing guidance, avoiding community, and staying uninitiated. That’s dangerous. It’s childish. And it’s time we stopped pretending otherwise. ...

Why should you build a tribe instead of a job?

Image
A tribe is a group of people who have similar beliefs and similar interests. These groups of people are often led by someone and the leader's job is to help the group reach their goals. Now, before you start thinking this sounds a lot like a job, let me tell you that it isn't. A tribe is not something that you can lose one day because your boss decided they wanted to replace you. A tribe is something that you build and nurture with time so that it never dies out even if you are no longer there to lead them. It's something that grows organically with time and eventually becomes self-sustaining without any leadership whatsoever. And why would you want to build a tribe instead of working for yourself or at a job? The answer is simple: security. I'm sure many of you have experienced what it feels like to get laid off from your job or how it feels when a company decides to close down. When this happens, your whole life comes crashing down around you because suddenly all tho...
