The Locked Door with No Key: Why Ohio’s SB 153 Threatens Our Voting Rights Imagine being told you must enter a building to access your rights—to speak, to be counted, to shape the laws that govern your life. The door is locked, and you're told you need a key. But no one will tell you what kind of key you need. Some folks bring house keys. Others arrive with driver’s licenses, birth certificates, even passports. They jiggle them in the lock—nothing works. They aren’t denied because they’re unqualified. They’re denied because the rules changed without explanation. This is the danger behind Ohio’s Senate Bill 153 (SB 153)—a bill that hasn’t passed yet , but is already knocking on our community’s door. What Is SB 153? SB 153 is a proposed law—not yet passed —currently being considered by Ohio’s state legislature. It would require all voters to prove their citizenship before casting a ballot. That may sound fair on the surface—but the bill doesn’t define what “proof of citizenship” ac...

Nia- The Illusion of Disunity

So today I want to focus on these trouble makers who keep us divided. Let's call them the illusionists because they are magicians of sorts. They are skilled at getting us to believe that we are separate and not united. They are masters at getting us to see and even create the differences between us and others. They know that if we see ourselves as different from each other then we will not come together as one.

Now there are different types of illusionists, but for now I want to focus on the ones that come from within. These are the illusionists that in most cases we can recognize once we know what to look for. These people have a need to have drama in their lives and in our lives, so they try to create it when there is none. They do this by manipulating information and distorting reality, sometimes they do this to intentionally hurt someone or a group of people, but most of the time they do it because they don't know any other way to live. See these illusionists have been taught by society and their parents that this is how you live, you must get attention at all costs, even if you hurt someone else in the process, so you find ways to make things seem worse than they really are just so you can always be at the center.

These people may be your family members, friends, coworkers, and maybe even that stranger you meet in the coffee shop. They are all around us, and they will continue to attack us until we recognize them for what they are. Once we know how to identify them then we can call them out on their behavior, and create a space where peace and love can take over. Know these people for what they are and know that there is more of us who are uniting than those who would separate us. And one day we will be a united front against these illusionists as we unite with other groups of like-minded people.
