Conservatism, Reaction, and the Elder's Responsibility: A Message to My Age Grade

Image
Conservatism, Reaction, and the Elder's Responsibility: A Message to My Age Grade Great Day, Fam. This one right here? It’s not for everyone. If you’re not at or approaching Eldership—defined in our tribe as about 55 years old and up—you might not feel all of this. But if you’re curious, or if you’re one of those younger souls already walking with wisdom, you’re welcome to keep reading. This message is for the Elders. For those of us who should know better. And yes—I’m including myself. Let’s Start With the Mirror I’ve got to confess something. I’ve been guilty. Guilty of being reactionary. Guilty of falling into the trap of conservatism. Guilty of romanticizing the past. Guilty of looking at our young people and calling them “soft”—as if we were born warriors, as if we didn’t have to become who we are through fire, failure, and guidance. Many of us Elders are stuck in a loop. We remember only the highlights of our youth—the toughest times we survived, the boldest moments ...

The Magic Hour

Image
The idea of starting this show came from a conversation I had with one of my brothers. This was long before the internet was in our pockets and shaping our lives the way it does today. We made a plan to create a internet radio station called "GyeWeb Radio", that independent artist could use to promote their music. We wanted to provide a venue for the unheard artist to air and promote their skills. The ultimate goal was to help independent artist build a fan base outside of the main music industry and develop a revenue stream to support what they do. We felt that the industry was choking the life out of Hip-Hop, and we had a grand plan to save it. Unfortunately the cost at this time would have been in the 10's of thousands of dollars. With the financial crisis looming and by getting caught up in the "Great Real-Estate Hustle" we didn't have the money to finance the project. Fast forward about 10 years and now with the advancements in the internet and the dev...

Humbleness As A Tool

Image
I have noticed that many people lack humbleness, I guess that this principle has been dismissed as something that is old fashion and has been thrown on the scrapheap of history. Humbleness, I have found to be a necessary weapon of a warrior. Humbleness is one of the major principles that need to be honed and sharpened in the old and young.  How can you learn if you have no humbleness? Yes high self esteem is important, but for some reason humbleness has been removed from the concept of esteem and replaced with false pride. In order to learn we have to be able bow our heads, close our mouths, and open our two ears. There is no learning without a humble heart. In order to learn we have  be willing to admit our ignorance about a situation. Admitting ignorance requires humbleness which  is important and can not be done by someone who has confused pride with self esteem. Admitting ignorance to someone or an institution is the first step to being able to gain the knowledge the...

My New Love For Aesop (African origins)

Image
I have been recently introduced to the fables of Aesop, and I am enthralled by them . These stories are an untapped resource. The wisdom and life lessons that flow through these stories is incredible. The one issue that i have about these stories is that they are market only for kids, but I feel that these stories are even more relevant for adults. These Tales use animals, tools, and gods to teach life lessons that stick. I was doing some studying and ran across the idea of inoculation. For those that don't know,  inoculation is a process by which a disease is implanted in a person, plant or animal to stimulate disease resistance. Of course the disease that is implanted is weakened but it is strong enough to cause the recipient 's immune system to react thereby developing the antibodies to fight the disease. When reading about this process immediately I thought about Aesop's fables, and the proverbs that I have been studying throughout the years. I believe that these tales...

You Are The Greatest

Image
You are the Greatest/ You just got lost in a maze/ That you created/ The purpose of me writing for the Journey is to add value to  the life of those that read my articles. My goal is to uplift, enlighten as well as to  learn from those who are willing to share. This is a passion for me that I struggle with, but yet it has opened so many doors. I have learned so much over the years that sometimes it rushes out or through me so fast that I can't keep up. I need you to realize that you exist in a paradox. On one hand you are the greatest of creations, and on the other you are less than a speck in the total scheme of things in this universe. When we take time to look at where we are in life we can become overwhelmed. Because we have been placed in a place of utter confusion. These paradoxes we live with can sometimes exhaust those of us who were bold enough to begin walking this Journey. My passion is to help you in this walk. To help solve some of the confusion and to help yo...

Gun control or People Control

Image
"Freedom has never been gained or lost in one sweeping  coup d'etat, but more in small stark steps that culminate in either the victory or defeat of  the people." Freedom is a heavy burden to bare, and it requires those who operate under it, to observe the world so that  they will not lose it. Freedom is a double edge sword that cuts both ways and sometimes will cut those wielding her if they are not paying attention. Look at what is going on America and understand that we are suffering from cuts from the sword of freedom. Just because you cut yourself with a tool (a sword like freedom is a tool that is used by people) does not mean you put it away. You either find a better tool for the job, or you improve your method of wielding it. Both of these option requires the user to do work either on the improvement of the tool, or to practice working with it (tool). We can not and should not give away our freedoms because we have been cut by them. We hav...

The New Warrior

Image
I   have   been   looking   at   the   concept   of   the   warrior   for   the   last   few   days,   and   an   insight   hit   me.   All these   years   I   had   been   preparing   my   body   for   war   on   a   physical   battlefield.   Practicing  martial   arts,   running,   and   training   myself   and   others   for   the   battles  that  life would bring.   I   have   attempted   to   push   myself   to   my   physical   limits   through   fasting,   exposure   to   the   elements,   through   personal   trials   and   tribulations.   I   realized   that   all   these   things   are   important, ...
