Trials of Gye (foundation myth for Gye-Nyame Tribe) part 1

Image
Trials of Gye Long ago, before time was counted and broken down into small units designed to eat up our lives, there existed a proud people that dwelled in what we call the east. They existed in peace and harmony from the beginning. These people called themselves Black, naming themselves after the color of the earth from which they came. These people were many but divided into different tribes each one being led by their own chief. There was never a need for all of the people to come together because there was plenty of resources for them to exist in harmony. In one of the tribes, lived a young man by the name of Gye. Gye was the eldest son of a chief named Conive and was in line to rule his tribe. Gye had a younger brother name Sen who was very jealous of Gye's position. Sen happened to be chief Conive's favorite. Together they often schemed to make Gye look bad before the people and to throw him into disfavor. Sen was in constant competition with Gye, and won most of

New Definition of Power

Image
"On mile 3" my spreaker radio show I discussed a new definition of power but left out the connection of humbleness to true power. To be Humble = to be empty...? I have come to understand humbleness in this way from a ancient Zen story: A Zen master was being visited by someone wanting to know about Zen. Visitor began asking alot of questions. The Master served the visitor the visitor tea. As the visitor kept talking the Master kept pouring. The visitor watched the cup over flow and the tea rolled down the table into his lap. The visitor jumped and said "the cup is to full you are wasting tea everywhere!" The Master replied "like this cup you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?" Listen to show and learn  the power of emptiness/a void.  New Definition of Power

Thank you

Thank you very much/ For within your behaviors/ Lies a lesson for me/ I have not posted in a while. I don't know if it is because of frustration or just plain laziness. Today the inspiration hit me and I didn't have time to write at work but I felt it was important enough to pen my thoughts on this situation. Modern tech has made it so easy to share and I have been investing a lot of time on my spreaker station, but this Ha2ku needed to be discussed through the pen or should I say the key board. While working with young people today I ran into a young man whose behaviors were irrateing me to no end. He couldn't or wouldn't (I don't know which) stop moving or talking with me. He was a case study for persistence. He had it set in his mind that he was going to get what he wanted and started asking me for it over and over and over and over..... hopefully you get the idea. I noticed my breathing began to shift and became shallow I noticed my body began to heat up,

3 levels of learning

Image
Levels of learning/ There are three within our tribe/ Memory,mind,heart/ In the Gye-Nyame Tribe we focus on 3 levels of learning. The idea is that if we can explain the process of learning, at least the way we see it, this will make it easier for those involved to not only learn the information they need for our Tribe, but it will make life long learning a lot easier. These levels of learning were stumble upon by watching the growth of many organizations and individuals over 20 year period. The first level memorization is the building block for the next 2 levels. This is where we take in new information and become familiar enough with it to answer basic questions. The goal is to learn the information verbatim. We also use a scribing method to help with this part of the process. I have personally witness this simple method boost the confidence and information level of people in my Tribe, and in the many other organizations that proceeded it. After the information has been dig

Gye-Nyame Steaming Journey III

Image
Here is another meal I put together in my steaming journey. I am looking for meals that are healthy and good for me as I begin to move back to my warrior weight. Today we have a green bean mix. I simply mixed some fresh green beans, some of my left over great northern beans, onion, garlic, and bell pepper . Steamed over a bed of salmon. I used some cinnamon, a little  turbinado sugar , salt, black pepper , and a little to much  cayenne pepper to season it. I also squeezed some fresh orange juice over it as well. After completing steaming. (30 minutes) I put it over a bed of rice (did not steam rice only have one steamer here), and now I am about to eat. So far the only effects have notice from the steam food is a slight itchy feeling in my skin, I will do some research but I figure this is my body adjusting to the food. I will keep you informed about any other changes that I experience from my new diet changes. Nuff said Peace & 1hunidyears look at that salmon Brother H

In remembrance of Geronimo Ji-Jaga Maat Pratt

Image
Image by crsosone via Flickr Geronimo Pratt we salute you and your life Ancestors await Before I began this blog about elder Geronimo Ji-Jaga Maat Pratt I first want to salute the elders in my life that made it possible for me to meet this man and have a serious discussion with him about the freedom struggle of the past, and the future. My path to meeting elder Geronimo was a long and blessed path that allowed me to run into elders all over this world and it is important for me to send shouts all to all of them , as well help the reader understand the power of service to your community, and walking this Journey. My story begins with meeting an elder by the name of Tony West who did a performance for my incoming class of 1987 at OSU. Through him I was introduces to the African center for study and worship. I volunteered and helped a historian by the name of Nommo X who in turn introduced me to Dr. Moriba Kelsey who gave me my first job in the community, and through this job I met an

Gye-Nyame steam adventures

Image
This Journey involves alot of experimentation, and today I reached in and started experimenting with eating as much steamed food as possible I will be sending photos to the blog so that you can see some of the stuff i have figured out how to cook. I decided to start steaming because i have been reading about the raw food diets out there. I like the flavor of cooked food and decided to try the next best thing steaming my veggies. From what i understand from the research you only loose a little of the nutrients when you expose the food to steam. I will let you know how it goes for me. I will be putting down (the junk food and the black and milds eventually... hahahaaa), I need to get back into fighting shape because I have some new challenges ahead of me. I will keep yall posted. the meal that you see on the screen is a mixture of kale and mustard greens, with onions, a little salt some old bey, and a few herbs that I could find at my mama's house. this was ready in 15 minutes and

Simba was coming downstairs. “At ease Brother and thank you for the respect.” Everyone in the immediate area greeted him. “Jay come with me.” I followed him out of the patio door and into the garden. He sat on the bench and I remained standing in angalia. “Relax Jay, I brought you out here to talk with you. I want to explain what is about to happen.” “Yes sir.” I sat down next to him. “The family is at a crucial point in our development, and we need people around that really have the group’s best interest at heart.” “I understand Sir.” “The next step for you is to get clarity on why you were chosen, and for you to find your Nia.” “I know my purpose, and that is to serve the club and to build this nation.” “That is what you have been taught to say. Is that what’s really in your heart?” I grew silent because in a way he was right. Ever since I ent

Number 7

Image
Image by Leo Reynolds via Flickr Seven looks backward/ Study, rest, and perfection/ It's view of the world/ Discovered that I had not completed the number system so here you go and we complete the reat of the numbers before the end of the year. After this one we only have 2 more to go, and then maybe in 2012 I will try to wrestle with the zero... Seven is the masculine number that represents study rest and perfection. This is a crucial number in the process of development. Because in order to move forward it mus look to the past. This number is very similar to the indinkra symbol Sankofa. To look back the number 7 must stop, and rest and in its resting it builds power to move to the next level.  Perfection is a process that requires proper rest and study. When we study we sit still and focus our mind, and that is important when we are dealing with this number. It is said that if we do not obey the mandate of 7 and continue to try to move forward. The universe will find

The Baba - Chapter 6 part 2

Image
Image by FreeWine via Flickr   Chapter 6 cont. It was almost six months before Simba stepped back into Brother’s. He looked as if he was under a lot of stress. He checked the books, and reviewed a report on everyone from Wise. Then he disappeared again. Wise came into the kitchen and called me outside. “Jay I don’t like prying into your business, but what is your relationship with Baba Simba?” “He is my sponsor.” “What!? How long have you been in our house?”                         “I completed my initiation 6 ½ months ago.” “Well Baba asked me to give you this.” He reached into his pocket, and gave me a cowry shell . Cowry shells in the club represent rank. After my initiation I received one shell signifying I was a Brother in the organization. Receiving my second shell was a sign that I was being moved up to the level of Majestic. “He asked me a lot of questions about you. Far as your work ethic , and I gave you good marks. It seems that he has plans for you. I was

I also have been assigned to the male house where my training continued, but seems less intense. Every now and then I see Simba, but he has been traveling a lot lately. I work all day in the kitchen with four other brothers and two beautiful sisters. All are nation builders. Two belong to Gye Nyame House, and the other 4 belong to the House of MChugangi. “Peace my name is Jay Kwabena.” Since I was the new face, I thought it would be proper for me to break the ice. “Peace god”, one of the brothers said with a smile. “ I am Kofi, also known as David . What house do you belong to?” “Im Gye-Nyame.” “Um, I am MChugangi, and that is Leroy he also Kwabena. He’s MChugangi. The two sisters are Jasmine, and Zendria. They also are MChugangi as well.” “How about the other two brothers?” “That is Siles and Wise of Gye-Nyame.” “Cool….nice meeting of you.” I b

New Age guerilla tribute to Jimon Jones part II

Image via Wikipedia Guerrilla in midst/ Using Hip-Hop as weapon/ Waking consciousness/ I must admit that I didn't understand Jimon 's concept of revolution or what he called "guerrilla grime lyph" until I picked up a book called "Guerrilla warfare" by  Che Guevara . In this book the world famous revolutionary Che' who came to fame as a major player in the  Cuban revolution , described the concept of true guerrilla warfare. He states that the guerrilla fighter is a "social reformer, that takes up arms responding to the angry protest of the people against their oppressors, and that he fights in order to change the social system that keeps all his unarmed brothers in ignominy, and misery. He launches himself against the conditions of the reining institutions at a particular moment and dedicates himself with all the vigor that circumstances permit, to braking the mold of these institutions." Our old friend Fear, yep one of the deadly seven. Actually Fear is the seven (fear, envy, pride, greed ,sloth, lust and anger). fear manifest itself through each one of these seven. it comes into our lives and freezes us in place. keeps us stuck in things we know we need to move beyond. The good news is that fear is a signal that change is coming. we just have gird our loins and push through. When we stand before fear we are presented with a gift that we have to take a risk to get. look fear in the face that it presents you and chase it away. because it is a coward, it, will not stand before moves made boldly. it will nag you from behind the battlefeild, and your task is too keep moving leaving it so far behind you that you cant even hear its echoe. move boldly on your journey. Spirit Writing

Image
Voices from the past/ speak to us from within heart/ echoes to future/ Spirit Writing This is an exercise that I have been experimting with over the years.  This helps with my meditation .  In fact it is form of meditation. I call it Spirit writng.  I just calm my mind, put a pen in my hand and begin writing.  I don't go back or erase. I try to open up my heart and let what comes out hit the page.  Here is an example:   "Ancestral intervention will come when we least expect it.  Our ancestors surround us and fill up all the space around us.  Open yourself up so that you can feel their presence. Listen and you can hear them trying to talk to you about things that are and things that will come.  Drop your training, you have been educated not to hear them, open your mind and allow them access and they will expose you to an infinite amount of knowledge.  they will give you the keys to the kingdom.  Why hesitate do you not know that you are not alone in this world.  We have nev

Image via Wikipedia Click cover Chapter 5 (cont.) All my free time is spent studying with my generation (those that came in the same time as I did). We have to be able to answer all the basic questions. They start by asking us about the symbols of the club. From there we have to get into what is a nation, and eventually get to our family line. My family line  was simple. Simba was brought in by Ha2tim who is one of the founders. I am the only person Simba had brought in so far. Other family lines were fifteen people long. I had been going through the underworld for months and I had not seen Simba. Even when I am on work detail. I was sent a to work at the different establishments that the club owned. Many of these places you would never know the club had anything to do with. The longer I am in the more amazed I am at the depth of the influence of the club in this city. It is amazing what they are doing. The membership is full of people you would never expect from politician
